Reverse osmosis is a more economical way to desalinate seawater than distillation methods such as multistage flash (MSF). While reverse osmosis requires high pressures, distillation requires high temperatures. The figure below compares the cost of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) with thermal desalination distillation.
