Isobaric energy recovery devices (ERD)s such as PX Pressure Exchanger™ (PX™) devices are the most efficient solution for membrane desalination today. ERI PX devices operate at up to 98 percent efficiency and reduce the energy consumption of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems by up to 60 percent, making desalination a cost-effective solution for clean water supply. Although most isobaric or "positive displacement" ERDs were designed for membrane desalination applications, they can potentially be applied to any high-pressure hydraulic application to recovery pressure from a waste or reject stream and use it to pressurize another stream.
