Energy efficiencies have increased significantly since 2007, thanks to investments in new technologies (source: IPIECA), but there’s also been a corresponding increase in energy needs. The growth in older fields; the requirements of enhanced oil and gas recovery and water reinjection techniques; the increased volumes of crude oil and gas being processed; the rise in sour gas fields; minimizing the space, footprint, and energy usage on offshore infrastructure, such as Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units—all of these factors necessitate more energy-intensive processes. In addition, midstream industrial processes such as gas sweetening (where various compositions of amines are used to remove H2S and CO2 from gases) also consume significant amounts of energy at high costs.

STEM for Millenials: Building the Next Generation of Innovators 

As pioneers in the energy recovery industry, we embrace sustainability as a means for smarter innovation and profitable growth that benefits not just our partners but the planet too. We also know that we need to share our knowledge, which is why we’ve created the STEM for Millenials program.

Since 2013, we embarked on a education outreach programs here in the San Francisco Bay Area, both in Marin and Alameda Counties. With every school, we match a core group of our engineers with students to develop a “Design of Experiment” project. The goals are to work collaboratively to develop engineering processes such as critical thinking, problem solving, intellectual persistence, hands-on engineering and computer design skills.

As a forward-thinking company, we want to invest in our community and contribute in some way. As a talented group of professionals in the fields of material science, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering, we have the opportunity to share our expertise with a local community of high school students and inspire them by what we do at Energy Recovery. We believe that we can influence and inspire students, and have a lasting impact on their interest in the fields of engineering, material science and overall energy policy and energy saving technologies. By giving high school students the opportunity to see what we do here every day and work with Energy Recovery mentors directly, we can elevate their academic experience and possibly pave the way for their future academic and professional careers.
